Basics
Before you start
Zumba-style classes mix Latin rhythms with simple, repeatable steps. You do not need dance experience. You need a little space, comfy shoes and the willingness to look silly together.
Counting in 8s
Most choreography is built from 8-counts: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. A verse is usually four 8-counts (32 beats).
- Count out loud together at first.
- Counts 1 and 5 are the strong beats, so changes tend to happen there.
- Practise with the metronome.
Posture
- Soft knees, always. Never lock them.
- Chest lifted, shoulders down and relaxed.
- Engage your core. Hip movement starts there, not in the ribs.
- Land softly and roll through the foot.
Arms
- Pump: bent elbows, fists at chest, push up on the beat.
- Swing: let arms follow the weight shift.
- Clap and snap: a simple accent on the strong beats.
Dancing as a pair
- Stand side by side facing the same way, with one arm-span between you.
- Share the same screen so you both see the same cue.
- Mirror each other only after you know the step.
- Laugh. It is part of the workout.
Safety
- Warm up for 5 minutes and cool down for 5.
- Wear supportive shoes that let you pivot, and clear the floor of rugs.
- Keep water nearby and take breaks whenever you need.
- Stop if something hurts. If you have health concerns, check with a doctor first.
