Description

Step down onto one foot while the other foot slides backward along the floor and lifts off at the end of the slide. That lifted foot then becomes the next stepping foot, so the feet alternate and the weight moves to a new foot on every trench. Teachers show a Broadway and a hoofer version; in the hoofer version the step lands farther out to the side than where the sliding foot started.

Practice Tips

  • Let the sliding foot really leave the floor at the end of its slide - if it stays down, it can't come through for the next step.
  • Start at one trench per beat and make the step land crisply on the count; speed and bigger arm swings come later.
